Niantic Is Launching A Real-World Metaverse Social App
Campfire is designed to make exploring the metaverse easy.
Last month Niantic, creator of popular AR mobile games such as Pokémon GO and Pikmin Bloom, made its Lightship Visual Positioning System available to developers, further laying the groundwork for its ambitious “real-world” metaverse. The company also announced Campfire, a new kind of social network designed to help users discover new people, games, and events.
Earlier today, Niantic announced that the social app will begin rolling out in select regions this week, offering users an easier way to connect with the Niantic community. Support for Niantic games will begin this summer with select groups of Pokémon GO players before expanding to all games and players sometime in the near future.
In addition to games, the app features a variety of networking capabilities. A dynamic map of your local area shows nearby players, community events, and game experiences. A tab located at the bottom of the screen features a handful of useful tools that allow you to stay connected with friends or make new ones.
You can organize gym raids, share your location with friends, keep track of upcoming meetups, start a group chat, and more.
“If you’re traveling somewhere new, or just want to explore new areas of your city, the map is a fun way to explore. And if you meet up with others, you can send them a friend request and direct message to coordinate your next meetup,” said the company in an official release.
“We’re excited to see the ways you use Campfire to foster the kinds of real-world connections that have always been at the heart of what Niantic does. Stay tuned as Campfire rolls out to your region over the coming months.”
As previously mentioned, Campfire will begin rolling out in select regions over the next few days. For more information check out the official announcement here.
